MARSHALLING AT BIKE MEETINGS
Have you every wondered what would happen if there were NO Marshals, you would have NO racing ! So how does someone become a marshal, well believe it or not it's quite simple, you volunteer. ........Yup that easy! Forget what you've been told about it being a "Closed Shop"
Now of course you don't just walk out on the track and stand on a corner, there is some training involved, after all it is a very responsible job, and irresponsible of the Organisers to let you out there unsupervised.
At the foot of the page are listed a number of clubs who run club meetings, and who are always looking to recruit new marshals. Club racing is where you start to learn your craft, from there you can progress on to do the big National and International meetings, just like the riders do!
What's involved? and what are the benefits? well the hours are long and the pay is Nil (usually) although most clubs provide their marshals with lunch of some kind and occasionally there are some freebies such as T-shirts, badges, hats, gloves etc etc. So if you are doing it for the money your in the wrong sport! You have to love the sport, enjoy standing in the rain all day, being the first out on the track and the last in. Did I say there were benefits? Well these include uninterrupted views of racing, a free program, close action (as in riders at your feet). The adrenaline rush of being (literally) in the thick of the action, being part of a well drilled team, and the thanks you get from the riders when you load their bike into the recovery truck ! and the Organisers when you come back in (if your lucky)
If all this appeals to you then contact the clubs listed below, and they will send you all the information you need, you'll be helping the sport you love to watch.
